I had a nickname for Jerry that few others knew about, and even fewer knew what it meant. I called her my "Jer Bear". It might seem silly, but to me, she represented what a teddy bear represents to a child. I could always count on her for a hug, and for validation that I mattered as a human being. I told her several times, although not nearly enough, that if I could have chosen my mother, it would have been her. Then, afterward, I could always be counted upon to leave the room before the inevitable "waterworks" started.
